Matt and Kelly
"Kelly was reluctant to take the trip to my family's land in
Richland Center, Wisconsin. We had just gotten back from
California after graduating and Kelly was nervous about
finding a job. But, I had her convinced that we were going
just for the night to relax and hike around, so when I told
her that we had been given a chore to do she wasn't all
that excited.
But, together we headed into the woods to
plant the small tree that my parents had sent along. It was
a beautiful May afternoon as we walked slowly along the
path enjoying the warm air. I carried the shovel and Kelly
carried the plant. We arrived at a spot in the woods I knew
well.
I would walk out to this very spot whenever I had the
chance in order to think about my life and my future. I
would enjoy the beauty and peacefulness that surrounded
me and wonder what the person I would bring to this very
spot would be like. I would pray that someday God would
give me someone to bring to this spot, so we could think
about our future together.
I told Kelly this is the spot my
Dad had instructed me to bury the plant. Kelly began to dig
a hole, but stopped after a few minutes. 'Okay,' she said,
'it's ready.' She insisted the hole was deep enough. But, I
knew better, so I grabbed the shovel and began to dig on
my own.
(My turn.) At this point, Matt went kind of crazy. Of
course, it makes sense now, but at the time... Well, he kept
digging and I was getting impatient, when suddenly he hits
rocks. I looked down into this already too deep hole, and told
him to just leave the rocks there. He was going to bury the tree
alive at this point anyway, so what were a few rocks? But, he
gets down on his hands and knees in the mud and starts
throwing these huge lannon stones over his shoulder.
Underneath the stones was a Tupperware container that I
hadn't seen in 2 years. You see, when I was 20 years old, I
wrote a letter to my future wife. And now I was giving it to
her. I handed Kelly the container and told her what was
inside belonged to her.
I was so confused. I opened the
container and found a laminated letter inside. It said many
wonderful things, but the best was at the very bottom, "Will You
Marry Me?" I turned around and there was Matt, shaking and on
one knee, with a box in his muddy hands.
I had tears in my
eyes as I asked her to be my wife. She is the one person I
have waited my entire life to find. She made my joy
complete when she replied, 'Yes.'"
