How To Sew a Wedding Garter

Buying a really nice wedding garter can cost a lot of money - and let's face it, when are you ever going to wear it again? Why not sew your own wedding garter? I think you will be surprised at just how easy this can be! Here's how to sew your bridal garter.

You will need (all found at your local fabric or craft store):

  • Plain, simple bridal garter, usually white ($3.00 - $7.00)
  • Lace ribbon or other decorative material (cost dependent upon how fancy you choose)
  • Charm, rose ribbons, or other embellishment ($0.50 - $5.00)
  • Needle and thread
  • Scissors
  • Small piece of cardboard (to stretch garter around)

Now, here's what you do:

  1. Stretch the simple bridal garter around the piece of cardboard.
  2. Thread your needle - Cut a piece of thread (about 1.5" long), put the thread through the eye of the needle. Make sure to tie a knot at the end of the thread.
  3. Sew the lace ribbon to the inside of the bridal garter. (You can sew it to the edge that already has some lace or the other edge - it is up to you and what you would like your garter to look like.)
  4. Finish sewing by putting a loop into the garter and then tying a knot through the loop.
  5. Hot glue or sew your charm or embellishment to the center of the garter.

Voila! You have a nice looking wedding garter that you won't feel guilty about tossing. You can even make two if you want to keep one for yourself.

Here are some additional hints to help you out:

  • Many brides choose a charm with the year of your marriage on it (these can be found at your craft store, usually near the wedding "stuff".)
  • Consider putting "something blue" on your wedding garter.
  • Make your garter more meaningful by using lace from your mother's wedding dress, pinning a special brooch to the center or even a momento from your relationship (just be sure not to toss this portion of the garter, or make a special "throw garter".)

Have fun making and sewing your wedding garter and as always - be creative!

Sincerely,
Kelly Kons
