Here are some tips to help you when purchasing items via eBay:
Set a spending limit - Try doing a search at Froogle.com to see how much the item would cost if you were to purchase it new from a retailer. Make sure that you do not spend over what you might pay for the item new. Also, be sure to factor in shipping costs into the total you are willing to spend. It is easy to get caugh up in the excitement of the auction and go over your spending limit - so make sure you set a rule for yourself. If the auction goes past your limit - wait for another auction. There are new items posted every day.
Be aware of sniping (pronouced like wipe-ing) - Some bidders will bid at the very last second using third-party tools. This may cause you to lose a bid at the very last moment. You can also use this method if you would like. (Search Google for "ebay sniping" to find some services who would do this for you). There are strong feelings in both camps - those who believe in bidding early and those who like to bid at the last second but as this thread points out - what is important is that you bid the maximum you are willing to spend - and then whenever you lose it really doesn't matter because someone else was willing to spend more.
Look at the payment methods the seller will accept - Some sellers will only accept a money order (which requires some extra work on your part). It they will accept PayPal, you can pay immediately by credit card or electronic check.
If you are new to eBay, spend some time in their tour for new buyers - eBay has a lot of great resources for new users, including this audio tour to guide your through your first auction. Consider spending some time in their tour and their Help section to familiarize yourself with how everything works.
Have fun finding all the help you need in planning a cheap wedding on eBay.com!
